In 2021, the Sydney Bus Museum plans to celebrate 40 years of articulated bus operations in Sydney, with the restoration of Mercedes-Benz O305G 'bendy bus' 2556.
2556 entered service with the NSW Government (Urban Transit Authority) in 1983. The bus formed part of a fleet of 30 of its type that ultimately formed the backbone of public transport services on Sydney's Northern Beaches, right up until the early 2000s.
2556 was withdrawn from service in April 2010 and subsequently donated by the NSW Government to the Museum for preservation. The bus has since remained in storage and is now planned for restoration.
The Sydney Bus Museum is seeking donations from interested members and the community to assist with the purchase of materials and paint supplies to complete the repainting into the original white, orange and brown livery.
Preparation work will be undertaken at Leichhardt by Sydney Bus Museum volunteers ahead of painting, which will be performed by a skilled Museum volunteer at Transport Heritage NSW's paint shop in Thirlmere.
We would greatly appreciate any financial assistance to complete this icon of Sydney's past.
